The Work
We photograph every coat in its true state. No flattering angles on the before, no hiding what we're actually working with.

Coat matted at flanks, undercoat compacted
Gleaming tri-color, feathering flowing clean
Technique Note
“Undercoat rake — 45° angle through the saddle, working with the lay of the coat, not against it.”

Collar mat, chest furnishings tangled

Chest silk restored, collar line defined
Technique Note
“Chest furnishings require a slicker in the direction of growth, then a fine comb through to the skin.”
First visit — 14 weeks, coat beginning to blow

Puppy intro complete — calm, clean, confident
Technique Note
“Puppy introductions are never rushed. Brush for 10 minutes. Stop. Treat. Repeat. Build the association.”
The Invisible Labor
A rushed groom takes 90 minutes. Ours takes three to four hours because we work through every section the coat actually needs — not just what's visible from five feet away.

A Berner's double coat requires a rake held at 40–50° to the skin surface. Too shallow and you skim the topcoat. Too steep and you scratch. The angle changes across the body — flatter on the saddle, steeper on the thighs where the undercoat packs densest.
The hair between paw pads is cut flush to prevent ice balls in winter and slipping on hardwood. We use blunt-tip shears and work slowly — a Berner's paws are ticklish.
Ear fringe is thinned, never bluntly cut. Chunker shears remove weight while preserving the natural feathered drape. Over-thinned ears look shaved; under-thinned ears mat in weeks.

Bernese Mountain Dogs have elevated skin temperature compared to most breeds. We use a cool-water rinse after every bath and keep blow-dry distance at 8–10 inches minimum. Skin irritation from heat is the most common post-groom complaint we prevent.
Standard on every groom at Bernese
Between Sessions
A Berner's coat doesn't stop between appointments. These are the three tools we recommend to every client — the same ones we use in studio, available to take home.

Double-row, rotating tines
The same rake we use in studio. 20-tine double row with rotating heads that glide through a Berner's undercoat without scratching. Ash handle, balanced weight.

8oz · leave-in conditioning
Colloidal oatmeal soothes Berner's warm skin between baths. Cedar oil deters fleas naturally. Smells exactly like a freshly groomed chest — warm oat, soft wood, clean.

Ergonomic grip, flex pad
Flex-pad base absorbs pressure so you can work through chest furnishings without discomfort. Soft bent pins reach through topcoat to undercoat. The brush for between-session maintenance.

I drove 47 minutes each way and I'd do it again without hesitation. Rosie's coat looked better than it did when she was a puppy. They understood immediately that her saddle mats differently than her chest — no groomer has ever said that to me before.

Theo went in anxious about the dryer and came out half-asleep on the table. That's the puppy introduction session — they spent 20 minutes just letting him sniff the equipment before touching him. He's been easy ever since.

The technique notes they send home are worth the price alone. I learned more about undercoat raking in one session than in three years of YouTube videos. Bear's blowout reduced our shedding by probably 60%.

After two bad experiences at chain groomers — one left Hazel's ear fringe bluntly cut, one missed a mat behind her collar for six weeks — I found Bernese. They found three pre-mats I didn't know about. That's the difference.

Luna has the thickest double coat I've seen on any Berner. Every groomer we tried before said they couldn't do her in under 2 hours. Bernese took 3.5 hours and charged fairly for it. The coat was extraordinary. No shortcuts.

The oatmeal spray they sent home — I've been buying it every month since. Atlas used to scratch after every bath. Not anymore. Whatever they're using on his skin is clearly the right thing.
